The Maine Humanities Council is thrilled to honor Professor Conforti with the Constance H. Carlson Public Humanities Award.
Distinguished University Professor Joseph A. Conforti founded the American and New England Studies Program at the University of Southern Maine in 1987 and served as its director for the following ten years and as Professor to the present. He will be retiring at the end of 2010, leaving a legacy of excellent teaching and passion in his area of research.
Though well known in the humanities world for his books and publications Imagining New England: Explorations of Regional Identity from the Pilgrims to the Twentieth Century and Saints and Strangers: New England in British North America, to name just two, his awards (the Richard Beale Davis Prize of the Modern Language Association and the Northeast Popular Culture/American Culture Association's annual best book award), Professor Conforti is revered by humanities organizations statewide for his generosity and accessibility. It has long been known that when a regional studies scholar is needed, Professor Conforti is there.
Professor Conforti has been instrumental in helping local museums and historical societies as a volunteer, scholar, and trustee. He has participated in lecture series for these organizations across the state and provided scholarly support for their projects. “He makes himself accessible to the cultural community in Maine,” a former American and New England Studies student and museum director said.
The day will include remarks by Professor Joseph A. Conforti, Distinguished University Professor at the University of Southern Maine, and Professor William Ferris, Joel R. Williamson Eminent Professor of History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the senior associate director of its Center for the Study of the American South.
