Joshua Chamberlain, a decorated Civil War officer, president of Bowdoin College, and Governor of Maine had become a footnote to history until the book Killer Angels by Michael Shaara captured the popular imagination. A fictional account of the battle of Gettysburg, Killer Angels focuses on Chamberlain as one of the day’s heroes—but was this account a true representation of what really happened at Little Round Top on that July day in 1863?
