What is Literature & Medicine?

Literature & Medicine: Humanities at the Heart of Health Care® is an innovative, award winning program for health care professionals that helps them increase their job satisfaction, cultural awareness, communication skills, empathy and inter-personal skills—all through the reading and discussion of literature with colleagues. Not only are CEUs and CMES often available, it is also a lot of fun. As one participant described it, ‘It brings joy back into my work.’

Participants read great books and gather together over dinner for the important—and rare—opportunity to reflect with one another about their work through the lens of literature.

The program is not a class, but a powerful way to share perspectives in a safe environment where all voices are equal. The groups are a mix of people involved in caring for patients, including (but not limited to):

  • nurses
  • physicians
  • support staff
  • allied staff
  • administrators
  • chaplains
  • social workers
  • hospice workers
  • midwives
  • therapists
  • health care policy makers

Since 1997, Literature & Medicine has been held in health care institutions in 20 states under the auspices of partnering humanities councils.
